Each year, International Women in Engineering Day (IWED) celebrates the impact of women engineers across the globe, while reminding us that diversity is key to building smarter and more sustainable solutions. With that spirit in mind, we bring you a conversation and a new episode of our podcast “CDM Stravitec Speaking With…”, where we take the time to get to know our team beyond their professional roles. This time we speak with Gaëlle Bruggeman, Project Engineer at CDM Stravitec - and yes, someone who definitely knows how to keep things… structurally under control.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your journey: what led you to engineering - and more specifically to structural acoustics and vibration isolation?
I’ve been interested in building and construction for as long as I can remember and I’m very sensitive to noise.

Can you walk us through what your role (Project Engineer) looks like today?
As an engineer at CDM Stravitec I get to analyze the technical information we receive from our potential customers and design a custom solution that will meet their needs in terms of vibration isolation and also in terms of loads distribution and support so that the solution is structurally safe.

What does this day (IWED) represent to you personally?
Other than being a very good excuse to celebrate engineers, of course.
Well, yes I am a woman and an engineer, but this is nothing so extraordinary on my point of view.

Thinking about your journey so far, were there any challenges along the way, and how did you navigate them?
Like everyone, some nights of stress when I reviewed my calculations in my head instead of sleeping because I was afraid of having missed something.
Luckily, the most challenging projects are also usually the most interesting.

What advice would you give to young women and boys considering a career in engineering?
Give it a try - you won’t regret it.

What does being an engineer mean to you today?
As an engineer today, I am proud of participating in the realization of a lot of great projects. Even though vibration isolation is not something visible on the outside, I know that it is very important and will bring more comfort to people.

What motivates you outside of engineering?
I love to have friends and family over. During my holidays, I enjoy discovering new things: new countries, new landscapes, new people, new recipes, new techniques. I enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, swimming and gardening as much as indoor ones, for example cooking, sewing, reading or playing games with my kids.

I’m a very fast reader.
