Overview
A cultural landmark for over a century, Massey Hall underwent a major revitalization to preserve its architectural heritage while enhancing its function as a world-class performance venue. Located in the heart of downtown Toronto, the venue’s tight urban footprint and proximity to transit infrastructure posed challenges for both structural modifications and acoustic isolation.
Designers and engineers were tasked with integrating modern performance spaces and technical upgrades without compromising the Hall's acoustic signature and historic charm. A key element of this transformation included the addition of new spaces such as a performance venue and voice studios, where vibration isolation was critical to ensure performance integrity across overlapping zones.
Solution
To meet the diverse acoustical and structural demands of the Massey Hall renovation, CDM Stravitec worked closely with the design team to engineer tailored floating floor solutions that addressed the unique conditions of each performance space.
In the new performance venue, Stravifloor Mount, a resilient pad-supported system, was selected for its low-profile design and excellent impact isolation. Installed as a wet solution using concrete slabs, the system provided the necessary acoustical separation from both structural noise and airborne sound, while meeting the strict build-up constraints of the subgrade space.
For the voice studios, Stravifloor Channel was used to float the entire performance area on resilient steel channels, offering optimal vibration isolation despite the lightweight floor structure. Installed as a dry solution, the Stravifloor Channel accommodated mechanical and architectural penetrations with ease, enabling seamless coordination between trades.
With both solutions, CDM Stravitec ensured long-term acoustic reliability and efficient installation within the constraints of a heritage structure undergoing extensive upgrades.
